Ukraine carried out one of its largest overnight drone attacks against Russia since the start of the war, killing at least four people including three near Moscow and striking the capital's oil refinery, according to Russian authorities. The attacks, which began late Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, targeted multiple regions including the Moscow suburbs of Khimki and Pogorelki, as well as the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine. Russian air defenses shot down 81 drones headed for Moscow overnight, marking one of the largest assaults on the Russian capital since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. A woman was killed when a drone hit her home in Khimki, while two men died in Pogorelki approximately 10 kilometers north of the capital, local Governor Andrei Vorobyev reported. At least 12 people were wounded in Moscow, mostly near the entrance to the city's oil refinery, though Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated the refinery's technology remained undamaged. Russia's Defense Ministry reported that air defenses destroyed 556 drones over Russia overnight, with over 1,000 drones shot down or jammed in the previous 24 hours. Moscow's Sheremetyevo, Russia's largest airport, reported drone debris falling on its premises without causing damage, and all four Moscow airports faced rolling disruptions with dozens of flight cancellations and delays. The strikes appear to be retaliation following a three-day ceasefire that ended May 11, after which Ukraine faced a barrage of Russian attacks including a strike on Kyiv that killed 24 people, including three children, on Thursday. Russia attacked Ukraine with 287 drones overnight Sunday, 279 of which were shot down or jammed, according to the Ukrainian air force. Ukrainian authorities reported that eight people were injured in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region, with residential buildings damaged in Dnipro, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, and the district of Synelkove. The exchange of attacks marks a significant escalation in the conflict following diplomatic efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to broker a temporary ceasefire earlier this month.
