UNH study finds sex and romantic intimacy remain important for many adults 60 to 83

Mar 4th 2026

Interviews with 100 single online daters ages 60 to 83 show that sexual desire and the value placed on intimacy often continue into later life, with older adults adapting to change and facing partner shortages and health communication gaps.

  • Researchers conducted phone interviews with 100 single adults ages 60 to 83 who used online dating platforms, evenly split between 50 men and 50 women.
  • Ninety seven participants said sex was very important in a romantic relationship.
  • Seventy two participants, evenly split with 36 men and 36 women, said they would not pursue a relationship that did not include sexual activity.
  • Participants reported adapting to age-related physical changes through medical support, redefining intimacy, or changing expectations rather than giving up sexual connection.
  • Limited partner availability, especially for women who outnumber men in older age groups, constrains dating and sexual opportunities for many older adults.
  • The researchers urge better patient provider conversations about sexual health because sexually transmitted infections are rising in this age group and medical conditions can affect sexual activity.
