A top United States envoy has asked FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in the 2026 World Cup, according to a Financial Times report. Paolo Zampolli, the U.S. special envoy, made the suggestion during a conversation with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, arguing that Italy's four World Cup titles would justify its inclusion in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Zampolli, who is Italian, confirmed the suggestion, saying it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament. The report indicated the proposal is part of an effort by the United States to rebuild relations with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after Trump and Meloni exchanged criticism following the pope's election. Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time after losing the European playoff to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Meanwhile, Iran secured its spot in the World Cup in March 2025 through Asian qualifying rounds. Despite initially saying the team would not participate due to the war, Iran reversed its position. Infantino confirmed Iran will compete and stated that he visited the Iranian national team in Turkey, where they expressed their desire to play. Infantino also rejected Iran's request to move its matches to Mexico. Iran will open its campaign against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles.
