American military forces carried out strikes on Qeshm Island, an Iranian island bordering the Strait of Hormuz, on Tuesday in response to attempted Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting the region, U.S. Central Command announced. The escalation began after the U.S. military fired a Hellfire missile at the Botswana-flagged M/T Lexie tanker, disabling its engine room for attempting to breach a U.S.-imposed blockade on Iranian ports near Kharg Island. Iran subsequently fired ballistic missiles at Bahrain and Kuwait, though CENTCOM stated all missiles either missed their targets, broke apart in flight, or were intercepted by air defense systems, while three Iranian drones targeting civilian mariners were also shot down. In response to the Iranian attacks, CENTCOM carried out self-defense strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps then escalated further, targeting the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain with missiles and drones, which were intercepted before causing damage. Kuwaiti air defenses were also activated overnight as alarm sirens sounded in the country, with the army confirming intercept operations against hostile threats. The exchanges occurred despite a fragile ceasefire between the two countries that took effect on April 7, halting most direct hostilities following a U.S.-Israeli war against Iran that began in February 28. Iran restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, after the war began, while Washington enforced a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Since April 13, the U.S. military says it has disabled six ships attempting to breach the blockade, with an additional 122 vessels redirected. Negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program and the status of the Strait remain stalled, though CENTCOM stated its forces "remain vigilant and ready to defend against unwarranted Iranian aggression during the ongoing ceasefire."
