A leaked Pentagon email has revealed that the United States is considering punitive measures against Nato allies perceived as unsupportive of US military operations in the Iran war, including potentially reviewing Washington's backing for Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands and suspending Spain from the alliance. The confidential memo, confirmed by a US official to Reuters, expresses frustration over certain allies' reluctance to grant essential Access, Basing, and Overflight (ABO) rights for the conflict with Iran, with the email stating that such access represents "the absolute baseline for Nato." Spain refused to allow its bases or airspace for attacks on Iran, while Britain initially hesitated to grant US access to its bases for the operations. The policy options circulating at high levels in the Pentagon also include barring "difficult" countries from prestigious positions within the military alliance. President Donald Trump has previously harshly criticized Nato allies for not sending their navies to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which was closed to global shipping following the start of the air war on February 28. Spain's ambassador to Washington was summoned by the US in March over Madrid's refusal to support the military campaign. A former British naval commander, Admiral Lord West of Spithead, dismissed the military impact of losing US diplomatic support for the Falklands but branded the threatened review an "insult." The Falkland Islands remain a British Overseas Territory defended by a permanent UK military base, with Argentina still maintaining its claim to the territory. Notably, Argentine President Javier Milei is an ally of President Trump, adding complexity to the situation. The Pentagon's internal deliberations represent a significant fracture in transatlantic relations as the US pursues its military campaign against Iran.
