Violence erupts across Mexico after drug lord El Mencho killed

Mexican authorities say Jalisco cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes was killed in a special forces operation, triggering nationwide retaliation by the Jalisco New Generation cartel and major security measures.
- Authorities say Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, died after being seriously injured in an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
- The defence ministry reported four CJNG members were killed and three soldiers injured during the operation.
- Retaliatory violence by the Jalisco New Generation cartel included burning vehicles, roadblocks and gunmen in the streets across at least a dozen states.
- About 250 roadblocks were reported nationwide, dozens in Jalisco, with shops and about 20 bank branches attacked and 25 arrests made.
- Jalisco declared a code red, halting public transport, mass events and in-person classes, while several airlines cancelled flights to the state.
- The United States provided intelligence for the operation, had offered a $15 million reward for El Mencho, and warned citizens to shelter in place in five Mexican states.
- President Claudia Sheinbaum said state and federal officials are coordinating the response and urged people to stay calm and informed.
